There were 135 Buddhist ditrctory list in Sri Lanka. Today there are three main Nikayas or Sects in Sri Lanka. Buddhism is considered the state religion of Sri Lanka and has been given special privileges in the Sri Lankan constitution such as government protection and fostering of Buddhist Dharma. However, the constitution also provides for freedom of religion and right to equality among all its citizens.
During Corvid 19 lock down, Buddhists in Sri Lanka are giving a helping hand to medical staff on protective clothing and equipment, food for displaced families during the recent flood disaster, and donating of books,uniforms, tables and chairs and toilet facilities to few remote schools where very poor children are schooling with out much help from the Government.
