Buddhist Study in Nepal

Religious institutions in Nepal are providing formal education. They have been implementing the formal education programs on their own initiatives. Recently, the government attention has gone towards the education systems of these religious institutions. The study reviewed the government policies regarding the education provided in the religious institutions. Considering the relevance of the monastic and formal education to achieving the goals of EFA, the government made a decision to bring this education to mainstream education. Under the decision facilities to be provide to the religious institutions for the development of formal education is included. 

Buddhist Study

Kathmandu University

Centre for Buddhist Studies offers academic programs leading to BA and MA degree in Buddhist Studies and provides research facilities for international scholars of Buddhism. The Centre is located at the Rangjung Yeshe Institute of Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery, just a few minutes' walk from the Great Stupa of Boudhanath in the midst of several thriving Buddhist cultures and traditions.

Rangjung Yeshe Institute has conducted seminars and study programs in Nepal for more than twenty years. Rangjung Yeshe Institute has been its ability to combine traditional Buddhist monastic learning with crucial aspects of modern academic scholarship in the area of Buddhist philosophy. The faculty at the Centre for Buddhist Studies comprised of scholars from both of these tradition, thus constituting a unique environment of both learning and hands on expertise.

Rangjung Yeshe Institute

Bachelor of Arts in Buddhist Studies with Himalayan Language. The Centre for Buddhist Studies offers a four-year program in Buddhist Studies with Himalayan Language leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts (BA). The courses in the BA program fall within two main areas of study: Buddhist Philosophy, History, and Culture, and Himalayan Language. For the BA degree, approximately two thirds of the courses concern Buddhist philosophy while the remaining third consists of courses in Himalayan languages such as Tibetan, Sanskrit, and Nepali, although students can choose to emphasize philosophy over language or vice versa.

Lumbini Buddhist University

Lumbini Buddhist University (LBU) from the sacred birth place of Lord Gautam Buddha,Lumbini,the fountain of World Peace, is an autonomous and public institution of higher learning committed with the mission to educate the People of Nepal.

The course of study is designed to provide a Academic knowledge of Bachelor Level in Buddhist Studies and Humanities (Economics, Major English and Rural Development) to the students who passed the Intermediate Level or Higher Secondary Level. The courses are of 14 Papers. Each of the paper holds 100 Marks. The duration of the course is of three academic years. There will be four papers in first year, five papers in second year and five papers in third year. At the end of each academic year students will have to appear the final examination conducted by University Examination Board.
