Education System in Taiwan

There are over 100 higher education institutions in Taiwan. All schools, including higher education institutions focus on Technological and Vocational Education (TVE), which involves matching the industries’ workforce demand and student abilities in a way that leads and highly contributes to Taiwan’s economic development and prosperity. Study period for university education is 4 years, between 1-4 years for Master’s degree and from 2 to 7 years for PhD studies.

Study Options in Taiwan

Language of instruction

TAIWAN HOST FAMILY PROGRAM

Taiwan Host family Program is organized by Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology (STUST), to give international students a more personal, first-hand experience in Taiwan. Living with a host family will not only give you a chance to see Taiwanese family life for yourself but will also allow you to build special relationships during your time here.

All of our host families are volunteers, so they must first of all be willing to open up their homes and lives to an international student, but they must also be financially able to do so. In addition to these two basic necessities, our host families must meet certain other requirements. For one thing, in order to qualify as a host family, they must go through our comprehensive training program.

Staying with your Taiwanese host family will give you an inside view of what life in Taiwan is really like. You will be living with a family that is volunteering to provide a roof over your head, a seat at their table, and a place in their hearts as well. When your time with the host family is over, you will have made some new friends for life. Since our host families are all volunteers, there is generally no fee for staying short-term (weekend or holiday) with a host family.

ON-CAMPUS ACCOMMODATION

On-campus undergraduate dormitories are divided based on gender and are open to students all year-round. Typically, four to six students share a room. Pets are not usually allowed. Dormitory accommodation costs about US$188 - $313 per semester. University students in Taiwan usually wear casual clothes to class. Coin-operated laundromats can be found inside dormitory buildings. Meals at on-campus dining halls cost about US$1.30–$4.10. Food stalls, cafes and inexpensive restaurants can usually be found close to campuses, typically within easy walking distance.Some campuses have on-campus health centers which provide medical assistance for minor ailments. Some colleges and universities have a post office, a bookstore and a bank on campus.

OFF-CAMPUS ACCOMMODATION

If there is no dormitory accommodation available or if you prefer a different living arrangement, off-campus apartments, studios, and flats are available. Most Mandarin learning centers provide information about local rentals on the internet. Rent ranges from US$200 to $600 per month, depending on the type, quality, and location of the accommodation.

International students are allowed to work only after completing two semesters and having great academic record and, if they can prove financial inability to support themselves.

Worth visiting is Taipei 101, at 509m, East Asia’s tallest building, located in Taipei, providing outstanding views of the surrounding area.

About Taiwan

Taiwan, also known as Republic of China, was founded in 1912, becoming the first democratic republic in Asia. With an area of 36,000 square kilometres, land of Taiwan lies off the South-Eastern coast of mainland Asia, across the Taiwan Strait from China - an island on the western edge of the Pacific Ocean. Neighbouring countries are Japan in the North and the Philippines in the South. The capital is Taipei, one of the largest cities in the country.

Portuguese sailors who first saw the island called it “Ilha Formosa”, which means the beautiful island.

The official language of Taiwan is Mandarin Chinese, but since many Taiwanese people are of southern Fujianese descent, Minnan is also widely spoken. English is the main foreign language taught in schools, thus it is spoken and understood.

Total population of Taiwan counts 23 million people, whose religion belong mainly to Buddhist or Taoist beliefs. During the country’s long history, Taiwan was populated by indigenous tribes, Dutch, Spanish, Japanese, and Han Chinese population, creating a varied culture and developing different local customs and traditions. Because the longest domination was under the Japanese rule, from 1895 to 1945, Taiwan today presents a unique culture, combining Chinese and Japanese elements.

The Republic of China is a sovereign state, with a government divided into five administrative departments: the cabinet, the legislative, the judicial and the examination (civil service). The president is elected by popular vote for a maximum 2 terms comprised of 4 years, on the same voting ticket as the vice-president.

Taiwan today is often described as economically prosperous and politically vibrant. The 21st-largest economy in the world, its high-tech industry plays an important role in the global economy. The country offers an excellent environment for learning Chinese and over the last decades it has continuously improved the standards of higher education, targeting students’ creativity.

Taiwan is known for its towering mountains and numerous mountains peaks that rise over 3,000 meters. The country is the home of Northeast Asia's tallest mountain, Yu Mountain (Yushan), which is nearly 4,000 meters in height, and has nine national parks.

Student visa for Taiwan

Students applying from abroad who have received a formal letter of admission should apply for a visa to enter Taiwan at the nearest R.O.C. embassy, consulate, or representative agency. Students may be issued a visitor visa or a resident visa, depending on the length of their study program. Students admitted to a degree program will need to apply for a resident visa. If you intend to stay for more than 6 months to study, you should apply for a resident visa.

Requirements

You will need the following documents:

- A passport valid for at least six months
- A duly completed application form with two passport-size photos in color taken within the last 6 months
- Supporting documents or official letters of approval from a competent authority of the ROC
- An admission letter issued by a college, university or language center in Taiwan
- Health certificate if applicable

Work permit

Working in Taiwan

International students who have attended a college, university, or language program in Taiwan for one year and who have an excellent academic record may apply for a student work permit where one of the following applies:

- Events of a serious nature have affected their financial ability to support themselves or continue their education, and the student is able to provide evidence of such circumstances.
- An academic research institution at the student's school requires a foreign student to provide assistance in its work.
- The student needs to take part in an off-campus internship related to his or her field of study.
- International students who wish to work in Taiwan are required to apply for and obtain a work permit before starting work.
