What can you imagine when the modern world mixes with the developing world? Probably something has beautiful as Malaysia. What it’s like to be a student in Malaysia

One of the things Malaysia is known for is constantly celebrating different holidays. There is an endless array of festivals going on all through the year; and if you’re a student there, it may not be a requirement to join one, but you may as well.

The lucky thing is there are several languages and ethnic groups present in Malaysia. That means, no matter where you’re from, you’ll find people capable of speaking English to you, and who will happily help you get around.

And, of course, the same rules apply to your classes in Malaysia. Be prepared for every class, and study hard before you decide to join yet another festival this month.

Like most countries, Malaysia separates their universities into public and private funding structures. That means, depending on where you go and what you want to study, tuition fees can vary. Moreover, tuition fees change depending on the level that you’re studying.

Compared to most other locations, especially in Southeast Asia, Malaysia is quite cheap. If you’re a student hoping to have enough spare change to spend on festivals, celebrations, and parties, you’ll be in luck! Rent and food isn’t too expensive. In general, you should prepare 350-500 EUR/month for living costs.

Here is a breakdown of living costs in Malaysia:

Student visa for Malaysia

Applying for a Malaysian student visa (Student Pass) is a multi-step process and might seem somewhat complicated at first. Please note that the visa application process and the list of required documents may change at any time. Make sure to get the latest information on the visa regulations directly from the Malaysian embassy in your home country. Getting a visa to a foreign country should never be taken for granted and cannot be guaranteed by Asia Exchange in any way.

Please note that it is not possible to extend the 6-month Student Pass in the destination. If you are thinking of applying for two semesters at UPM, you should apply for both at once, so that you can apply for the 1-year visa.

Application process

The Malaysian visa application process consists of 4 steps:

1. Electronic Visa Approval Letter application (eVAL)
2. Single Entry Visa application (SEV)
3. Student Pass application (the actual student visa)
4. Cancellation of the visa

Please note that eVAL (Electronic Visa Approval Letter) and SEV (Single Entry Visa) are not the Student Pass (Student Visa). Before being eligible for applying for a student visa (Student Pass), students must apply for an electronic Visa Approval Letter (eVAL) through EMGS (Education Malaysia Global Services) and pay the processing fee to EMGS. In addition, students need to pay a separate visa processing fee (270 MYR) to Universiti Putra Malaysia once they have arrived in Malaysia. You should start the eVAL application process right after you have received the Official Acceptance Letter (Offer Letter) from Universiti Putra Malaysia. The processing time for the eVAL application is about 3–6 weeks. After getting the EVAL approval, you should apply for the Single Entry Visa. You can apply for it at a Malaysian Embassy in any country except for Singapore. The actual Student Pass application will be taken care of at the end of your university registration process in Malaysia.

Work Permit in Malaysia

Students are allowed to work part-time for a maximum of 20 hours per week only during semester breaks or holidays of more than 7 days; in Restaurants, Petrol Kiosks, Mini Markets and Hotels as long as the Student Pass remains valid. Students are not permitted to work as a cashier. In addition, in the hotel sector, students are not allowed to work as singer, masseur, musician, GRO and other activities deemed to be considered immoral as per the Malaysian law. Application to work part-time must be made through the educational institution in which the student is studying.

Documents Required For Work Permit in Malaysia

Following documents are required:

Visa Application Form filled completely and duly signed by the applicant.
The Applicant should have a passport valid for at least 9 months from the date of entry into Malaysia.
Two passport-size recent photographs (35 mm width x 45 mm height) against a white background pasted and not stapled on the application form.
A typed covering letter from the applicant stating the purpose of visit.
Letter from the company / institution in Malaysia.
A Work Permit Approval from the Immigration Department in Malaysia (in original).
Please note this Approval Copy is received in a sealed envelope and should not be opened by the Applicant
Confirmed air ticket.
Original copy of VDR Approval Letter from Malaysian Immigration Department
An entry visa is issued, and period of stay is granted at the time of entry into Malaysia.
